Honolulu is the state capitol and the largest city in the entire State of Hawaii found on the southern shore of Honolulu. Honolulu is also the residential, commercial, industrial and recreational center for the State of Hawaii. The City and County of Honolulu makes up about 75% of the State’s population of almost one million people.
Honolulu’s name derives from the native words hono, meaning “a bay,” and lulu, meaning “sheltered.”
The City of Honolulu offers great nightlife activity as well as many tourist attractions and plenty of places to shop. The largest outdoor shopping center in the world, Ala Moana Center, is a wonderful place to shop, eat or just people watch, as well as many upscale stores and boutiques found in nearby Waikiki Beach and the Aloha Tower Marketplace downtown.
Honolulu’s largest public parks are Ala Moana Beach Park and Kapiolani Park where aside from shopping, other popular activities include surfing, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking and sightseeing.
Although a bit confusing, Honolulu is both a City as well as a much larger region, as the entire island is considered Honolulu City and Honolulu County. Some confuse Honolulu for one small area which many locals refer to as “downtown”. Other areas of Honolulu that are locally not considered “downtown” include suburban areas like Diamond Head, Kahala and Hawaii Kai. All of these areas will use Honolulu in their mailing address, but most people who own homes in these areas will not say that they live in “town”.
Of course, for all the single family homes and condos in Metro Oahu, it’s helpful to know exactly where these condos and houses are located when you’re considering a purchase. Prices in town are higher than outside of town because it’s far easier to commute to work when it’s 5 miles instead of 20 miles.
As far as the Honolulu real estate market is concerned, there are many little cities and neighborhoods, so it is easy to be specific about a particular area. And, whether a home or condo, views can be absolutely incredible, with many offering wide views of the Pacific Ocean, green mountainsides or gorgeous city views.
As for Metro Honolulu or the Downtown core, this large area includes Ala Moana, Kakaako, Makiki, Manoa, McCully, Old Pali, Pacific Heights, Punchbowl and Waikiki.
